Carbatrol (carbamazapine) and Blood test for Thyroid disorders

by Paulete, Nov 10, 1998 12:00AM

My 7-year old has been diagnosed with low thyroid (he has delayed growth, so we were checking his thyroid function).  TSH tests are now and have been normal all along, but T3 and T4 levels appear low.  The endocrinologist said that perhaps the Carbatrol (300 mg 2x/day) he is taking for his seizures may have distorted the blood test results.
The Dr. has prescribed Synthrex.  However, I am hesitant to put him on it if indeed the Carbatrol has distorted the blood tests.  Have you had any experience with this?

Carbamazepine has been reported to disturb thyroid function tests and decrease T4 and T3 levels.  But these values can be low on laboratory values though a person may not be hypothyroid.  TSH and T3 uptake in these situations are generally more accurate indicators of True hypothyroidism - You're right in saying that this is an important distinction to make - Ask your doctor what his interpretation of the entire thyroid panel is especially the above two tests.
