Central Pontine Myelinosis

by Luigi412, Sep 25, 2008 03:29PM
A family member was recently diagnosed with Central Pontine Myelinosis.  She is 55, overweight, has severe osteoarthritis, and smokes.  She was taking prescribed pain-killers and was on a prescribed liquid diet for a few months (800 calories/day). She discontinued the diet because she felt very weak.
Since she does not fall into the usual risk-groups for CPM, I am wondering if the liquid diet and/or pain-killers might have resulted in this.  The neurologist has ruled out MS, stroke, brain tumor.  MRI points to CPM.  Speech is slurred and she has some swallowing difficulties, including aspiration.
Also, since this is considered a "rare disease", is there a major medical center where this particular disorder is being studied?  We would appreciate any direction  you might be able to provide.

This discussion is related to central pontine myelinolysis.
