Cerebral Anuerysm post surgery side affect - taste loss

My sister, 55 yrs old, recently had cerebral anuerysim surgery this past summer 2004.  Thankfully she has recovered nicely and is back to normal daily activity, although she has daily headaches to deal with.

One of the most regrettable affects of the surgery is her loss of taste.  She will only on occasion get a small taste sensation, but for the most part cannot taste most foods and drinks.  Does anyone have any thoughts to share on this problem?  Is this loss of taste a typical side affect of the surgery?  Is there a possibility that her taste can return?  Are there any medical options/procedures to analyze and treat to help allow her taste to return?

I appreciate any insight.
Thank you.

It depends on where the surgery was performed in the brain, and where the hole in the skull was made. Occasionally the nerve fibers for smell can be injured, and after this patient's complain that food does not taste the same. Smell actually plays a large part in how we "taste" food. If this is the case, there is a chance for recovery over time. I hope this helps. Good luck.
