Chronic lower left quadrant pain

Chronic lower left quadrant pain

I am a 24yr female with a chronic lower left quadrant pain. I have had this pain for almost 3yrs now.  It came on when I was pregnant with my son.  The pain becomes most intense when I start my period.  I am unable to work when my period begins because of the pain.  It feels like I am being stabbed and that the knife keeps turning around on my lower left side (kind of where my ovary would be).  The skin above the pain is very sensitive to touch, even to were clothes.  My obgyn and digestive specialist can not find anything wrong.  My question is:  Could this be some type of neuralgia that was caused from pregnancy ( ilioinguinal neuralgia )?  Could this be hormone induced?  I don't really know where to go from here, please feel free to give suggestions.

Has endometriosis ever been mentioned? Or fibroids, ovarian cysts? All of these would cause pain during menstration.

When you say chronic, do you mean you have it 24 hours a day, every day, or chronic but intermittent?

If it is in the area of your ovary on the left side then it very well could be related to your ovary.  When I was in my teens I had chronic (sometimes daily and sometimes excruciating) pain on my right side where my ovary is.  I know it was related to my ovary but it couldn't have been due to ovulation because you normally only ovulate one day of the month.  I outgrew it and then later, in my 20s, I started getting pain (the exact same kind and in the exact same place, only it would flucutate from right to left) the day I was ovulating, so I always new exactly when I was ovulating.  Pain at the time of ovulation is called mittelschmerz, but I always thought the almost daily pain I had in my teens was also related to my ovaries.

Also, you might want to read up on endometriosis and ask your doctor about that.  That can definitely cause pain.  Not sure if it would be worse right at time of your period, though, but look it up and see what you find out.

I agree - sounds like endometriosis to me and I know because I have it. The only way to definitively diagnose this is via a diagnostic laparoscopy. That's how mine was diagnosed.I would find a good gyn. Mine was actually discovered because I had a solid tumor on my right ovary that turned out to be endometriosis. They went in and removed it and found it throughout my pelvis as well. I wish you all the best and sorry for your pain. I know what that feels like and its not fun ! When I say chronic, I mean that it's a pain that never goes away.  I have had it for almost 3 years.  It gets worse when my period starts about a 10/10 pain, when my period is over then it goes down to about 6/10pain.  Never really goes away.  I have had many tests done and nothing come up with endometriosis.  All of my tests have been negative.

I've had a similar pain but it is only during my period. Severe, lower left quadrant and it feels as though someone is trying to rip my ovary from it's spot. I feel it's ovarian as I've had ovarian cysts rupture and it's a similar pain but this pain lasts for hours and hours and days at a time. Sometimes it happens during ovulation as well so I'm fairly sure it's ovarian related. I should note that I've only had this happen since an endometrial ablation last June.
The pain is worse than labor (I've had 5 children) and it requires strong pain meds to get it under control.
Here's what I've found to date.  It could be one of two things (I say that because I've had a diagnostic laparoscopy done) 1.  Adenomyosis (endometrial tissue within the muscle wall of the uterus 2. post ablation tubal sterilization syndrome. It would only be the latter if you've also had a tubal ligation.
I've scheduled for a hysterectomy in May as I've run out of options and I'm tired of
trying experimental things. I cannot live on pain meds so I've opted to have the surgery. I'm 41 years old and am done have children.
Maybe throw those two things out to your OBGYN and see what they say.
Incidentally, all my tests etc. have turned up normal but the same thing happened with my gallbladder 19 years ago and the pathology showed a grossly malformed organ once they had dissected it so I'm hoping they figure you what's wrong with the uterus and ovary when they're gone.
Hope this helps
