Clicking Sound Coming from Child's Head

My 5-year-old complained last night of hearing fireworks in his ears last night and wanted me to listen. I said I cannot hear in his ears, but I listened anyway, and I could hear steady clicking coming from his head! I took him to the doctor today, of course it was not clicking at the time. They said maybe it's an ear infection, but then saw no sign of one. His head is clicking again tonight. He says it does not hurt. He's had a head cold for a few days. Just a little background, he also he has herpes simplex in his eye and asthma, if any of that matters. This is really freaky. Of course my mind goes to awful, scary things!
