Cognitive impairment after bypass

Cognitive impairment after bypass

My father, who is 73, had open heart surgery 2 weeks ago.  Upon waking he was flailing and screaming etc and ended up being restrained to his bed and sedated for almost a week.  The hospital just "unsedated" him 5 days ago and now he is not himself AT ALL.  He makes no sense whatsoever, is hallucinating, verbally and physically abusive to everybody, and is now restrained again to his bed, but out of ICU as of a few hours ago.  The medical staff keep telling us to be patient and that he would eventually come out of whatever he is in, but there has been no improvement thus far and in fact seems to be getting worse.  This makes no sense to any of us.

The stats on this operation indicate that a percentage of patients sustain permanent damage.
