Coital Headache

Posted By Dennis on April 09, 1999 at 10:50:15:

I experienced a severe "ice pick" stabbing pain on the top left frontal portion of my head during sexual intercourse.  The first time this happened I was able to tolerate the pain until orgasm, however, the pain remained for about 15 minutes.  (I have sex w/ "explosive" type orgasms about five times a week.)  I've discovered that the pain only becomes debilitating during one sexual position: My wife is prone, while I straddle and enter from above, while supporting myself w/ knees and arms.  I point this out as this seems to be the only position where these severe headaches occur.  I tried this position a second time about a week later and this time the pain rose very quickly soon after I entered and became so severe I quickly lost my erection and withdrew.  The pain was "ice pick" severe and unrelenting, and remained that way for about 20 minutes.  It slowly diminished, but even now (days later) I can still "sense" the pain's position and (diminished) presence.  It's like in remission, and waiting for me to
return to the now "forbidden coital position."  I have had sex and/or intercourse w/orgasm about 5 times since the last episode, but being careful to monitor my progress, being ever watchful for the headache to return.  I have found that when I have sex now that I pace myself and try to be less strainful during the act.  This seems to prevent severe pain from returning (although the original pain spot increases a little) and satisfys my wife and myself.  My question is, is this serious and what can I do about it (I would like to be pain free in any position)?  I am 54 years old and have been sexually active since a teenager.  (I remember a similar incident about 20 years ago, but forget the (sexual) position I was in.)  It appears to me that if I return to the over-prone position that the headache is almost sure to return in seconds w/ extreme pain no matter what type of monitoring or pace I set.  The last time the pain took a half-hour or so before it diminished and returned to a tolerable level.  This whole
thing upsets me and freaks out my wife.  Your opinion please?
