Continued shoulder pain & finger tingling after surgery

I'm a 32 year old male.  About a year ago I started having constant stabbing pains in the back side of my shoulder and numbness/tingling in the 4th and 5th fingers on my left hand.  My local physician originally diagnosed me with Bicipital Tendonitis and Rotator Cuff Strain and sent me to 6 weeks of physical therapy.  It didn't help so I was referred to a neurosurgeon. The neurosurgeon diagnosed me with cervical stenosis after 2 X-Rays, 2 CT-Scans, and EMG, and an MRI.  I was given a series of steroid injections at the base of my neck in an effort to relieve the pain.  Each of the three shots helped for about four days.  I was told that the next course of action would be a C5/C6 Anterior cervical diskectomy and fusion.  I had the surgery just over two months ago and I am still having the exact symptoms as before.  Is this common or is it possible that something completely different is the real problem?
