Cramping Type pain in Hands

by boonieblue, Feb 02, 2009 07:18PM
Question regarding what is 1 of several symptoms I have been experiencing:  History... Female, 29yrs old now  went to GP for memory loss (trouble finding words), headache and overall ill feeling.  Had MRI (2006) findings included hyperintense FLAIR and T2 signal white matter abnormalities in right and left cerebral hemispheres.  These abnormal white matter foci do not show abnormal contrast enhancement. There is 4mm lesion in left frontal corona radiata.  There is 7mm lesion in the right parietal white matter.  There are small left parietal white matter (wm) abnormalities.  There is small subcortical right frontal wm abnormality.  Neuro has done a host of different tests (nerve conduction, spinal tap etc) said I had peripheral neuropathy, spinal tap- slightly high protein as far as hemo work up gluclose low, platelet count high, low ferritin, high iron binding capacity, elevated albumin, calcium and red blood count.  I have had migraines since 9 yrs of age (w/ aura).  Had severe abdomial (abdominal) cramping during time of memory loss and now.... again.   Had a baby 2 yrs ago...... had been ok (pregnancy fine) have had my usual hands/feet tingling burning and continuous twitches.  Had another MRI findings includes no significant change to number and size, however the lesions now measure anywhere between 11x6mm (right parietal) and 3x3 to 5x5 and "One of the lesions in the left midfrontal region is not located adjacent to lateral wall of ventricle, however is is oriented in a plane perpedicular to lateral wall of ventricle".  I am now beginning to be concerned as I have no diagnosis as of yet, MS is still on the table according to my Neuro and I now am having twitching on my tongue and face and everywhere really.  My headaches are down but I am now expieriencing memory problems again and abdominal cramps and recently (last 4 days) my left hand has a cramping type pain from the fleshy part of palm from the thumb and down my arm.  I could literally go on and on about all the lancing pains in my legs to arms and the muscle fatigue.  I just dont know what to do now..... whatever had happened in 06' is starting again and the symptoms from the 1st attack if you will have not entirely subsided.  Question:  In your opionion does this sound like MS or something different.  I have also worried about ALS due to the tongue facillitaions (sp) would that be a justified concern?  Please any advise would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks for you time

Hi,
Could you be please  more specific about changes in sizes  of lesions. of your MRI. scan.
In 2006 MRI scan there was .7mm lesion in the  right parietal white matter. In 2008 MRI scan(I assume) same lesion increased  in size to 11x6mm.Any lesions  detected in the area of pineal  and pituitary glands.Thanks.

According to the report there is no mention of the pineal area, it notes the pituitary glad as "not compressed".  As for the other lesions on the most recent MRI.... "THere is discrete focus of hyperintensity w/in the white matter in the left midfrontal region, another in the left posterior frontal region, one w/in the left occipital region, a small lesion in the right parietal region and a larger lesion in the right parietal region measuring approx. 11x6 in size.  The other lesions vary in size from 3x3  up to 5x5.  There are no lesions noted in brain stem or cerebellar structures.  THere is no contrast enhancement at any of the sites of Hyperintensity.  Do you find that the difference in size to be significant?  The Radiologist reported as no significant change.  I have however had significant change in my symptoms.  Originally when I went to Dr. in 06' I had very little sign of nerve damage.... today I can see the muscle twitching and they ache at times day and night (Dr. says RLS) , my feet and hands fall asleep, and the cramping in my hand.  Also, I had expierenced numbness in my stomach or just below my left ribcage.  I truely appreciate your comments... thanks again!

Assuming that both MRI scans were done   without contrast enhancement ,on the same equipment and  reported by the same radiologist, In my case   I would take  my MRI results to be interpreted by other specialist ( as many as you can afford)untill they convice me that there is no correlation between my symptoms and size of lesions on my MRI scan.
