Cronic high fever in a infant/toddler

My 16mnth old son has been suffering from cronic (chronic) high fevers sience he has been 2mnths old. I have been to the doctor so many times trying to find out what is wrong with him, and i know that high fevers can cause brain damage can someone help me try to find out what is wrong with my son his fater and myself are pulling our hair out. Could it be something neurological causing these fevers

Hi cheryluknow,

Sorry you have been struggling with this, the only connection to the nervous system that comes to my mind is the through the autonomic nervous system which includes the Hypothalamus, the Hypothalamus is on the under side of the brain in front of the brain stem and releases hormones that regulate body temperature, metabolism, and stimulating hormones to the pituitary gland among other things. Diseases affecting the Hypothalamus could led to chronic fever and other symptoms like poor weight gain, and malaise.

Non-Neurological explanations most commonly in infants would be that all infants have a weakened immune system. Measuring the amount of antibodies in his blood though may give clues to wether his immune system is developing normally.

Of course more serious but less common causes can stem from cancers of the blood or lymphatics, Leukemia and Lymphoma. So getting a complete blood count is an important clue to rule these out.

If your regular pediatrician has taken this as far as they can, it might be time to take it to the next level and see a Pediatric Internist, which is still a Pediatrician but they also have been trained in Internal Medicine.

I don't know if this helped much but maybe it will spark some ideas, Take Care.
