Hi there. Indications for treatment of meningiomas are evolving and usually smaller tumors less than 3.0 to 3.5cm average diameters respond best to treatment. Certain potential side effects of radio surgery are edema or neurological dysfunction. Usually it is a good option when the meningioma is small and not located too close to radiosensitive structures like optic apparatus. Large tumors and the ones, which can be resected easily, completely and with low morbidity are generally considered for microsurgical resection. The other criteria to be considered are patient age, medical status, patient preference and a cautious watch of radiation dose to minimize the potential for radiation induced optic neuritis. It is followed up with MRI usually at four to six months following radio surgery. Following this yearly MRI, scans are performed for a minimum of five years to assure tumor stability. Hope this helps. Take care.
