: Is it possible to permanently deform the neck bones and/or spinal
column by holding the neck in a position with the chin extended
forward for 5-6 hours per day, 5 days a week for a period of 10 years?
If so, would it be enough to cause pain in the neck?

Dear Harry,
I don`t think it is possible to deform your neck with repetitive
activities. It is possible though that you may strain the muscles in
your neck and may end up holding your head in an abnormal position giving
the appearance of a deformity. When very severe you may develop a
condition called torticollis in which the muscles on one side of the neck
go into a painful contraction. However, if you have any underlying neck
problems or degenerative disease it may be wise to consult your doctor
for an x-ray of your neck.
Interestingly some tribes in Africa are able to make their necks appear
longer by wearing large rings around their necks since childhood!
There have been reports of some of them developing very weak neck muscles
because of this custom.
Your pain might respond to rest or using some nifty gadgets available to
reduce stress on the neck whilst speaking on the telephone or sitting in
front of a PC.(and obviously stop aggrevating your neck the way you have
for the last 10 years)
Hope you solve the problem.
