Dental Nerve Damage Pain

After a lower third molar extraction, I have pain underneath my tongue and no feeling in the tongue area.  This has been over two months.  It seems to be getting worse.  If I touch the area near the extraction it is now extremely painful before there was nothing.  The pain in the right side of the tongue is much more pronounced.  I s this a sign it is improving?  Or, just getting worse
Dear Ann:
Sorry to hear about your pain.  Without being able to examine you it is almost impossible to tell you what you ask.  The numbness might be damage to the nerve but if the whole tongue was numb this is unlikely.  Second, do you have taste?  If you have lost taste to either sweet, sour or salty food then this would give an idea to which nerve was damaged.  If the entire tongue was numb then the nerve distribution doesn't seem correct as both sides would have to be damaged.  What might be happening is that you have an infection?  I think what I would do is go ask your dentist or the dentist who did the surgery.  Sorry, I can be better at isolating the problem.
Sincerely,
CCF Neuro[P] MD
