Depression and History of familial Meningioma

Depression and History of familial Meningioma

I am 20 years old and have major depressive disorder. I am currently taking amitriptyline which doesn't seem to be working and I underwent basic cognitive behavioral therapy that lasted about 3 months. Although I only just started psycho-pharmacological therapy (three weeks) I wonder whether this depression may be more biological in nature. Both my mother and my maternal grandfather had surgery to remove benign meningiomas. My mother's was about the size of a quarter and my grandfather's was about the size of a clementine. My mother's neurologist has reassured her that meningiomas do not regularly present symptoms in patients under 40 and that they don't even begin to develop until the early 20's. He ascertained that I would be at lowest risk for a meningioma at present. However, I have never had a neurological consultation with this or any other doctor. I have been suffering from depression-like symptoms for about a year to a year and a half and the symptoms appear to be independent of life stresses. Recently, I've noticed an increase in the duration and severity of my chronic headaches. Even with amitriptyline, I still have a headache a day. I wonder whether I should get a referral for an MRI, or if I should stay the course with psychological therapy and drugs and see if my depression and headaches can be managed.
Thanks for any help,

I don't see any reason why you can't do both things.
By all means continue with the therapy you are currently getting but pursue the referral to get an MRI.  The first psychiatrist I saw said that we'd always be looking for a physical cause of the depression and anxiety I had since many physical ailments produce these symtoms (symptoms) too.
I don't know anything about  meningiomas but if there is even the slightest possibility that they may cause your symptoms then by all means look into it.
