Difficulty Writing

I have been having trouble with putting pen to paper and writing. It started one day about a year ago right after I graduated from college- I woke up and tried to write something and before my pen would touch paper it was like my brain stopped my hand and I couldn't get my pen to the paper. It took several minutes before I could even write something. When I finally was able to write something my hand jerked and a mark went down the page.

This has been continual throughout the last year.  I have good writing days and bad writing days. Most are bad writing days. It's almost as though my mind has to be ready to write and even then I have to tense my hand to even feel like I can control my pen. I have been holding off on going to doctor because I know it is going to be very expensive!

When I write on a dry erase board with a marker- I am fine and my writing is fine. It's when I am writing on paper with a pen or pencil that I cannot write.

I have done a little research, but everything says something different. I found one chat line where a lady had the same situation that I do and her doctor classified her as SAD- I read through this and feel as though I do not have that ! I do recognize that I do have some sort of anxiety- I just went through having a baby a year and a half ago and I had PostPartum Depression and was on Zoloft- I have recently weined off of it. However, I am not inclined to believe it is linked with PP because I have had the writing problem before that!

I found another lady who has the same problem and her doctor said she had a problem with Carpel Tunnel. However, most people who had this problem said they went to a doctor and the doctor could not find the problem. I don't want to go see a doctor and spend all that money only to find out that the doctor cannot find the problem. At the same time, I am worried that this problem may be something more serious, such as a brain tumor, etc...

Any advice or comments you could give would be greatly appreciated! One more note- nothing else in my life has seemed to change, except my handwriting.

Hello brother, I am a university student in Bangladesh, I am having the same problem since I was in my high school. While writing on a page I do fine for the first few words but as soom as I reach the fifth or six word I lose control of my hand and I have to put immense pressure on my hand to control my hand writing. I have figured out different pen griping styles to eradicate this problem like holding the pen with two fingers or holding my elbow up etc. but nothing seems to work. I am in great mental distress for this problem, I cant even tell it to someone cauae people will laugh about it, I am feeling paranoid.

Same problem I am also facing, and this started like two to three months ago but a few days to my college exams. It was frustrating trying different writing style before I could writ out my mind called answers to questions asked. It really affects my academic records as I feel like my brain stops when I am about to write and reduces my efficiency. It's really saddening, and I feel like quitting college since I find writing exams difficult and the stress undergone reading for exams seemingly not achieved in the end.

I found myself not able to hold a pen anymore, my neurologist was thinking it was writers cramp or carpal tunnel.  I first had an EMG and was diagnosed with carpal tunnel but my writing just got worse.  6 months later my neurologist was determined it was writers cramp and  wanted to use Botox injection to relax my index finger muscle.  But she decided to look at my neck because I have degenerative joint disease, low and behold it was my neck causing the problem. The MRI revealed I have disc space loss and uncovertebral hypertrophy at c5-c6.  It all finally made sense.  Planning for  cervical spine surgery.

I also have had this for more than 15 years and have seen a neurologist who diagnosed mild Carpal Tunnel but I have never bought into it. I can type accurately at 80 wpm without pain but writing has become so difficult that I have reached the point of having others fill out forms for me. It is also embarrassing when people watch me because I raise my elbow to try to get more control and looks very odd. One thing I have noticed recently that if I hold both hands out I have a slight tremor in my writing hand. Is there not a doctor anywhere who understands this affliction?

Dear Schoena

My problem is exactly same as yours. Even i got it all of a sudden once when i was in college. I got up and all of a sudden same symptoms as yours.

Its been 15 yrs - and no solution.

When I was in college, I was so frustrated that I was forced to learn writing using my left hand - and to my surprise I was able to pick up writing using left hand and write my exam papers.

Its been several years but I still can't write smoothly. I work on computers now so don't have to write a lot but still sometimes writing a cheque is a problem.

I went to neurologist, did MRI but nothing came out.

Very recently I have developed another problem. I am unable to type on computers using left hand. Went to Neurologist - again no solution. I wonder if I have some neurological issue that doctors are unable to find out.

I too am having difficulty using anything except a computer to communicate via writing.  I thought it was due to a  side effect of two medications I'm taking, but can't find anyone else with that experience.  I have had a MRI for MS, and although I have lesions on my brain, the neurologist doesn't think I have MS.  It's very difficult for me to write at all anymore.

I have been having the same problem with writing.  The neurologist believed it could be a writers block which I thought was when you were not able to come up with ideas for a paper.  But she then decided to perform a EMG intramuscular and EMG on surface, it was very painful. The EMG revealed moderate case of Carpal Tunnel.  I wear a brace at night which I purchased from CVS Pharmacy, it helps with the other aches and pain in my hand but I also have some arthritis in my finger.  I have bruised my other fingers trying to find ways to hold a pen in my hand and it really is embarrassing because people notice I write really goofy looking.

Hello,

I am currently having a similar problem right now. I have just been having problems writing/typing. I keep on putting down random letters and I have no idea how I am able to control myself because it keeps on happening, and it really upsets me more than it truly should. This has been going on for roughly 3 years now, and it ended up flaring up quite a lot this year. I think this year has definitely got to be the worst for me. Sometimes I end up re-reading my messages after sending them to a group of friends on Facebook. Finding that I have added in random numbers or some sort... I just don't know that I am realizing that I am doing that whenever I type. It kind of scares me. My brain currently feels as if it is going onto overdrive and about to become liquefied. I feel like a laptop when it overheats and then begins to have problems processing anything as well as it should have been.

I'm sorry for the long list of words. I have been convinced for almost 2 months now that there may be something seriously wrong with my brain. I am very terrified at the moment. I have medications for bipolar disorder and SAD.

I'm not a health professional. I am a epilepsy patient with a friend that has "aphasia". It sounds like your writing problems "may" be expressive aphasia - difficulty in writing or speaking or both. Do you also have problems with interpretation of others speaking to you?
You absolutely need to see a neurologist ASAP - a good one. I can understand your reluctance, as I have been guilty of that when I first started having seizures, but whatever it is, remember you are not alone. Just get help and move forward! good luck
