Diffuse cerebral atrophy

by shannond923, Jun 26, 2008 04:55PM
Hi, my father had an MRI recently and the results listed as fairly prominent diffuse cerebral atrophy with increased CSF spaces. Otherwise negative examination.  What does this mean, the doctor mentioned Alzheimers, does this mean he will end up with dementia or Alzheimers?

Hi there.

Cerebral atrophy is a natural consequence of aging, and may indeed present later with some form of dementia.  The rate by which this will develop is unpredictable since personal characteristics vary.  It is important at this time that the person engages in brain stimulating activities, and be encouraged to continue reading that can somehow lower the rate of progression of dementia.

Regards.
