Dizzyness

I get dizzy spells and especially when I lay down or bend over. I was hit by a car while crossing the street in 2003. I went through the car's windshield and suffered severe concussio and vertigo. I went to specialist who performed a proceedure to align the crystals in my ear. Recently, I fell hard on my butt but do not remember hitting my head. Ever since, the dizzy spells have been strong. When I lay down, the room begins to spin and my son told me that my eyes are moving rapidly.

Without the ability to examine and obtain a history, I can not tell you what the exact cause of the symptoms is. However I will try to provide you with some useful information.

Vertigo, or room spinning sensation, itself has several causes. These can be inner ear (most common) or from the brain itself. Inner ear causes of vertigo most commonly include benign positional vertigo (BPPV), which is due to small particle in the inner ear that moves out of place. The symptoms of BPPV often include vertigo that occurs with turning of the head, especially while turning over in bed.

The symptoms you are describing seem to be of the BPPV type. It is easily treated with bedside maneuvers as you have had done before. These maneuvers are called the Dix-Hallpike followed by the Epley maneuver. Also, vestibular rehab and home exercises may be an option.

I recommend that you follow up with your physician for this. You may be referred to a specialist either a neurologist or ear, nose, throat specialist to treat the condition.
