Does Depakote effect cognitive functioning?

by Lisa-M, Feb 24, 1999 12:00AM

My dtr. has been diagnosed with PDD-NOS.  She is now 11 and has been taking Depakote for mood control for the past couple of years.  Can Depakote effect cognition, specifically, fine motor skills like handwriting?  Her handwriting was much better in the early years, but, has declined.  I am linking it to Depakote.  What do you think?

Depakote is not strongly associated with decline in cognitive function,
however it is asociated with a fine tremor of the hands whci might account
for poor handwriting in the absence of a decline in cognitive function
per se.
To clarify this it would be significant to see if other measures of
cognition like comprehension and memory are affected rather than the
purely physical act of writing which may be all that is affected in her
case.
