Dont know where to turn

Ive had the harrington rod surgery 18 years ago this year.  Recently, thinking i was having a heart attack i was admitted to the hospital.  Of course I thought i was too young for this (now 30yrs) so did the doctors.  They think it is neurological, but they cannot do the specific tests, like an MRI, needed for this because of the rod in my back.  I dont think they no what to do. lol.  Ive read a couple of your posts and noticed that some of you have had an MRI done with having the rod from scoliosis.  My doctors say it wouldn t be a good idea and told me horror stories of what could happen when you mix metal and a huge magnet! Does anyone no what options i have?  No one has refered me to a neurologist and the docs that assume its is neurological were a cardiologist and my primary care doctor.  My symptoms were; severe jaw pain, arm fatigue, arm and back pain, chest pain, headache.

I felled a large tree on my back 4 years ago and had scaffolding inserted from S2- T10 . It was hit or miss as to whether i would live or not .
I live in Tasmania and ended up in the Royal Hobart Hospital . The surgeon was of Asian Indian descent and was obviously a master of his trade , as i have experienced little , if any , pain since .
It was suggested that the reason it was a success , was the fact that i was fit and carried no excessive body fat . Enabling the team to work unencumbered.  I was 49 .
I have nothing but praise for everyone involved with my recovery .
Unfortunately , there was a distinct lack of nutritional information , which is extremely important , if the bone and body tissues are to heal properly and at a descent rate .
It's never too late to start taking them . Calcium and Vitamin D tablets, a good diet and cutting out smoking and alcohol , will all help in the recovery process .
Best wishes to all .
Mark.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi there. the Harrington rod surgery if has been advised for your back problems should be undertaken if you have tried NSAIDs, physiotherapy and epidural steroid injections, acupressure for your back problems and the results have not been satisfactory since these are the other possible therapy options. The results of any back surgery cannot be completely promising and depend on person to person, surgeon to surgeon. You have to weigh the options and outcomes of surgery and take a calculated decision. Take care.

My doctors removed my rods after about three years, philosophy being if it has not fused yet it is not going to. PERSONAL OPINION something went wrong 15 days after surgery, loud pop came to in bed was told it was scar tissue,
Have had more compression fractures and ruptured discs since then steady down hill since BAD BACKS SUCK!! Try different pain docs to find good one, not no to everything nor yes to anything.    charlie

YOU CAN OPEN MRI. THEY DON'T INTERFERE WITH THE ROD. YOU NEED TO SEE AN ORTHOPEDIC. THEY CAN HELP. I'M HAVING PROBLEMS 32 YEARS LATER. HANG IN THERE.
