Dreams

  Hello,
For a person who had suffered a head injury nearly four years ago,  it has been a very long time since I've enjoyed a dream while sleeping.  Is this common among head injury victims?  Will I ever enjoy dreaming again?  What can deducted from this fact?  Thank-you.   Harlan O'Mara

Dear Harlan:
Dreams occur with more frequency in a stage of sleep called REM.  We each go through 5-6 periods of REM.  If for some reason we bypass REM, our sleep is not very good and sleep disorders begin to show up.  I doubt if you have a sleep disorder, at least from what you have said.  Most likely you still have dreams but you just do not remember them.  However, it is impossible for me to say whether or not you have a sleep disorder since I have not examined you or reviewed your neurological history.  If this concerns you then I would get a neurological consultation.  I don't think I would be too concerned.
Sincerely,
CCF Neuro[P] MD
