Dystonic Reaction to Neuroleptics

Dystonic Reaction to Neuroleptics

Last night I had a dystonic reaction to stemetil (Prochlorperazine) and my jaw began shaking side to side and i found it difficult to breathe. It got worse as my body began to shake aswell. I went to the emergency room and they immediately gave me a bed and gave me some medicine to stop the reaction. They sent me home with nothing and every now and then i get a shake and my jaw still hurts. Will this last or will it go away by itself in a while?Im a teenager and this could really damage me if my face was to have a continuous twitch for the rest of my life. Please does anyone know if it will wear off?

Oh, yes, this is an important reaction to medication and you MUST visit the prescribing doc right away, do a telephone visit or get an emergency squeeze-in appointment, and get on some other drug besides what you're on, if any.  Some anti-psychotic drugs will cause Parkinsonian-type reactions, and they can stick around if you keep taking the suspicious medicine.  But normally if you stop the medicine quickly and receive the antedote, which is usually a tranquilizing medicine like they gave you in the hospital, you won't have anymore problems.  If you've stopped the drug, could be what you're feeling is just how hard the muscles pulled on your jaw, and movements will make it still hurt for a short while.  But take your concerns to the prescribing doc, let her make decisions about you, she might want to put you on a tranquilizer for a while, or she may even tell you to go to your regular doc for a better evaluation.  I had a reaction just like you when I was a young adult, went to the emergency room, got the antedote, and didn't have anymore problems, BUT it scared me so bad, and I know you know exactly what I mean, that for many years afterwards I would have nightmares about it.
