Elevated Liver Enzymes with Rebif

Elevated Liver Enzymes with Rebif

After 2 short-lived attempts at using Rebif (6 weeks and 5 weeks, respectively, I have had to stop treatment due to elevations in my ALT and AST liver enzymes. The first attempt my ALT=420 and my AST=188.  The last attempt, my ALT=162 and AST=116 when the doc had me stop, seeing me trending up again.

Now, I need to choose between Betaseron and Copaxone.  My question is: If my liver can't handle Rebif, is it likely that it won't be able to handle Betaseron?  I don't want to waste any more time finding the appropriate treatment, but on the other hand, I'd rather inject every other day rather than each day.

Thank you.

Not necessarily, but I certainly can't predict what your body is going to do with the Avonex. Research studies have shown that Rebif (which is a higher dose preparation of beta interferon than Avonex) is more associated with elevated liver enzymes than Avonex.  In a European-North American trial, 14 patients on Rebif had liver side effects compared to only 7 patients on Avonex.  It's possible that it could be a dose response effect, meaning the side effects come out with the higher doses.  Talk to your doctor about your concerns. Although they may have left the decision up to you, they should discuss the potential side effects of all the medications and help you make an informed decision that is best for you.  Good luck.

Have you tried Avonex?  I like the once a week injections and have heard that there's less of a chance of it harming the liver.  Good luck.
