Encephalitis...could it be contagious?

I have been spending all week in the hospital with my girlfriend's grandmother, visiting her. They are treating her for encephalitis, and I believe they ruled out meningitis from a spinal tap. My question is about her possibly being contagious. Now, the hospital has let multiple family members stay in her room to visit for long periods of time, so I'm assuming they wouldn't allow that unless they felt she wasn't contagious? Is that a safe assumption? I guess they are still trying to rule out what caused the encephalitis, and they're still trying to find out what virus it is. I've been in her room for 3 days straight for multiple hours, should I worry? Thank you.
