Encephalomalacia in 16 Month Old

My son was just diagnosed with encephalomalacia through an MRI.  He was full-term but had respiratory problems and spent 9 days in the NICU due to these problems.  He spent a few day on an oscillatory ventilator during this time.  Our pediatrician is saying that it is something to keep our eye out for, but that unless any other symptoms show up, they probably wouldn't do anything until maybe a year or two down the road.  The spot was approximately 9mm.  We are scheduling an appointment with a pediatric neurologist but that may be a few weeks before we can get in to see him.  Jaxen also had an EEG done right after the MRI that showed no abnormalities.

These two tests stemmed from a fit that he threw in which he stopped breathing and passed out for 2-3 seconds.  He had stiffened up right before he passed out and the pediatrician thought he may have had a seizure.  He is a very normal kid and in fact I believe he is fairly advanced for his age when it comes to motor functions and other cognitive skills.

Is this something I should lose sleep over or should I wait until I speak with the neurologist?  Any help would be appreciated.
