: My 32 year old relative has had intractable seizures for the past four years. In the past, she
also had suffered from prepuberty febrile convulsions. Testing and scanning to date
indicate occipital temporal dysplasia. Being on Felbamate for about six months caused no
reduction in frequency of about one seizure per week. What is CCF’s experience with
extratemporal surgery, what is involved and what are the outcomes? I would greatly
  appreciate your response.

Dear Ms. Goren:
Cortical dysplasia is one of the most difficult causes of epilepsy in terms of treatment. The Cleveland Clinic's epilepsy surgery program is the busiest program in the United States if not the world.
Surgical resection in these cases must be preceded by careful preoprative evaluation and video EEG monitoring. Once all the required studies are done, if surgery is recommended, the outcomes are typically very good in the hands of our surgeons.
If you are in the Cleveland area or wish to have your relative evaluated by our team you may wish to contact the office of Dr. William Bingaman at 216-444-5672.
If you have any more specific questions about these operations please write back to us.
Good Luck !
