Essential Tremors--Need help

by Judy__0__0, May 29, 1998 12:00AM

I was diagnosed with Essential Tremors when I was 13 yrs old. I was told to be back at the doctors when I turned 21 and never went back. Now I find that they are getting worse and their frequency is increasing (I'm now 26). I'm looking for information on medication or herbal treatments, the progression of this disorder and any information you can give me.
I'm attempting to avoid medication for fear that the effects of the medication can wear off after prolonged usage, but am getting frustrated by my inabilities to do the things I used to be able to do. For instance, typing this message is taking much longer than it should. Please help me. Thank You.

If you've never been treated, there is a good possibility that medication can be helpful. It is true that over years (and decades) the tremors gradually get a bit worse, for some people more slowly than others. There are three main medications we use for ET: propranolol, primidone, and clonazepam. I don't know much about herbal treatments. In the very distant future, if your tremors become so disabling despite medical therapy, there is the possibility that surgical treatment could help. (Deep brain stimulation is available now, but I say future for you because I'd bet that it's not time yet for you).
You are welcome to seek evaluation for this. You can see your own physician or get referred to a local neurologist, or you can come directly to us for advice. I hope this helps. Of course, you know that this information is provided for your general medical education only. Any specific comment regarding diagnosis, prognosis, or treatment options must come from your doctor after appropriate evaluation. CCF MD mdf.
