Extremely Sensitive Hands

Yesterday, I witnessed a dog run over in a hit and run. I stopped to help him and brought him out of the road while waiting for animal control. I was exposed to a small amount of blood and saliva, but nothing I was worried about.
When I got back home, I immediately washed my hands with warm water and soap and, simultaneously, my hands began tingling with a dull pain, almost as if they were asleep. I dried my hands off and washed them again, but the pain only worsened.  
I tried to ignore it and went to work where I noticed every sensation my hands experienced was extra sensitive, from running water over them to gripping objects. My hands are usually cold, I believe due to poor circulation, and that sensation has become unbearable at times over the past 24 hours. In the same fashion, anything hot is equally unbearable.
I cannot put any pressure on my hands and if I knock them against anything even slightly, shooting pain is sent through my entire hand. Random pricks of pain are constantly coarsing through my fingers and palms. Even typing this message is painful.
I have experienced this before on a much smaller scale. For about a week after a sports injury, the pointer finger and thumb on my left hand felt numb and asleep. It was nothing as intense as this, though, and the feeling eventually wore out.
Is what I'm feeling now only an advanced form of the injury I had before and will soon wear out or is it something more serious?

It sounds like it could be several things and based on your past experience perhaps a referral to a neurologist is in order. Best wishes!
