FEMORAL NERVE DAMAGE AFTER SURGERY

FEMORAL NERVE DAMAGE AFTER SURGERY

I had an A&P repair and bladder tack 3/4/8.  Surgery went fine except when I woke up from general anesthesia I could not feel my right leg, it was totally numb from my hip to my toes.  i have to walk with a walker and go to Physical Therapy 3x a week. No difference in my leg yet.  what should I do now?

Most of these resolve, I had the same complication post total hip. See a physical medicine and rehab doc or a neurologist for an emg to assess the damage. Even if it is not a serious injury, it still takes a long time. !4 weeks post surgery, i am beginning to have some return of the quadriceps which keeps the knee from buckling. I am still using a walker, but do have retun of feel. After surgery, I had no feeling from just above my knee to my ankle. I can feel most of my knee now! It is slow, nerves apparently regenerate at 1mm per day approximately. Sorry this happened to you. I was afraid it was permanent, but today the therapist said it was beginning to return. I only started driving the car last week, it is testing patience, but do get the EMG and consult. If the nerve is entrapped, you will want to know that sooner rather than later. Most of these injuries do resolve within two years with the greatest number functionally improved at 3 - 6 months. Good luck!
