Frank, This procedure is called a "BAER" block and is sometimes successful in treating chronic pain localized to a particular extremity, and the infusion is usually confined to the affected limb with a tourniquet in place. It is an option to consider in otherwise recalcitrant chronic pain, but any infusion of IV lidocaine acrries the risks of seizures and potentially fatal arrhythmias of the heart; thus, this is not a first line treatment.
