Dear Andy,
Facet injections are typically done with a steroid, such as trimcinolone, or a local anestheic such as xylocaine.  Often back pain can be due to 'wear and tear' or 'arthritis' which causes inflammation of these joints and pain.  They are used as part of conservative measures for patients with pain.  Pain relief may last a variable period of time depending on the patient and the disease process being treated.
Good luck.
