Facial Nerve Neuroma

by Carol139, Aug 26, 2009 07:54AM
Hello,  I was misdiagnosed with an Acoustic Neuroma and now found out it is a Facial Nerve Neuroma.   Does anyone else have one - anyone know someone who had this surgery and was able to retain facial feeling?  Hearing?

Eye twitching - first symptom - I ignored it, was back in Jan and Feb 09
Tinnitus - ignored it - as many people get this - started back in Jan or Feb 09 as well
June 19, 09 - face went numb and ear inside - like someone gave me novicane - went to the ER -
They said it was probably palsy or lyme disease, gave me anti-biotics and steroids - (taper down amount)
Numbness came and went in the face.

Finally got referred to a neurologist.
He sent me for an MRA and MRI -   the MRI showed the neuroma - they assumed it was Acoustic as that is the most common

Went to an ENT specialist, he said based on presentation and order of symptoms, and that my hearing is still fine, it is not an acoustic neuroma, he has to be a facial nerve neuroma and to pinpoint it, he is sending me for a closer look at the area with a CT scan on 9/11/09

size right now is 1cm by .86cm

He said I will lose the feeling in my face permanently and eventually lose my hearing - depending on growth rate - within 2 - 7 years

If I do the surgery it will immediately take away the hearing and 99% sure to lose the feeling on the right side of my face

Does anyone know any other possible outcomes?

Thank you for your assistance,

Carol
