Familial ALS

: I posted a question on 3/18, regarding up-to-date information on possible triggers for inherited ALS, etc..  Apparently, it was not read; in any case, no part of my message received a response.  Will you please read it? I'd greatly appreciate a response.

Dear KM:
The percentage of inherited forms of ALS is very small.  Even in these, the exact mechanism of ALS muscle weakness is not understood.  The genetic defect in SOD and neurofilament has not been translated into a generalized mechanism of ALS.  Given that the mechanism of disease is not known, the triggers of ALS are also unknown.  We are unsure who is at greater risk for developing ALS.  Since most of the people to get ALS do not have the inherited form of ALS there is only speculation on the inducers.  Because a medication causes fasciculation as a side effect does not necessarily mean that it will induce ALS.  We just do not have enough data and good studies as of yet.
Given this background, I did do some speculation on the previous posting.  But any given neurologist will likely have his/her own intrepretation of what might be the rational choice of etiologies.
I hope that your are not too frustrated with such an inadequate answer, but there is currently no good answer to your question.  I hope that prozac is not an inducer in your case.
Sincerely,
CCF Neuro MD
