Fasciculations on EMG

Posted By One Worried Dude on March 17, 1999 at 10:14:45:

I have been getting fasciculations and a general feeling of shakiness for about 4 months now.  It started in my groin area, which is unusual according to my primary care physician, but have become widespread.  I've seen two neurologists who each performed a clinical examination.  The first said my fasciculations were benign, I did not need an EMG, I did not have ALS and I did not need any follow-up visits.  The second neurologist also was skeptical that anything was seriously wrong and did not observe anything out of the ordinary on the clinical examination.  However, he ordered an EMG.  A third neurologist, from Columbia in NYC, performed the EMG at the four month anniversary of the symptoms and noted fasciculations in my arm, and both calves (although I did not notice or feel them).  However, absolutely no other abnormalities were found in the EMG.
The second neurologist said fasciculations in three different muscles was very unusual (which raised my anxiety level alot) but said I do not have ALS based on the clinical exam and the otehrwise normal EMG (other than the fascics).  In addition, he said that the fasciculations do not make it more likely that I will get ALS in the future.  He said I should come back for another clinical exam in 6 months just to see how I'm doing.  Finally, the neurologist that did the EMG also said I was fine (other than the fasciculations).  He did not think I needed any follow-up or another EMG in 6 months as is sometimes recommended.
Finally, I'm 38 years old and for the past two months, I have begun to work out by running and lifting weights.  I have definitely gotten stronger and in better shape during that time period.
I have three neurologists telling me that I have BFS and not ALS.  However, my anxiety level is so high that my primary care physician has placed me on Zoloft. Below are my questions:
Should I be comforted by the EMG results and diagnosis of BFS or should I continue to worry because the EMG showed fasciculations?
Could anxiety have caused the fascics on the EMG as I was very, very nervous while taking the test?
Do you agree that benign fasciculation syndrome does not evolve into a more serious illness, in particular, ALS?  I understand that a diagnosis of BFS doesn't protect me from getting such illness though.
