There's a several real easy things you can do, to lessen that anxiety you feel late at night.  I have to take tranquilizers to chase away the dark feelings, so you could visit a county mental health clinic and see will a psychiatrist give you those, and also the psychologists there can talk with you about what your fears are, to get them out of your system.  Usually anxiety comes from a general lack of confidence that is created by something awful that happened in your life recently, or by feeling trapped in job or social situations, or by misplaced anger and frustration because of everything from injury to stagnation to failure.

One simple way to chase away those dark feelings at night, is in the daytime exercise vigorously and regularly to where you break a sweat.  It can be simple stretching exercises, long walks and swimming, all the way up to tennis, martial arts, and horseback riding.  This gets nervous tension out of the body, helps you relax easier at night and fall asleep faster.  Also, it's important to have a creative hobby, gives you positive feedback, and it can be learning to play a musical instrument, puzzles, painting.

Two is to make where you sleep very pleasant.  Me, I love the color blue with white, so I painted all my walls blue, all the trim white.  I put pictures up that I really like of animals.  On top of my mattress, I put some of that egg crate foam you buy in the Kmart for less than $20, and real soft sheets on top of that.  The temperature has to be just right in your room, where you're not freezing or hot, which can be helped with an electric blanket or fan.  Also, I have a couple dogs and a husband, so of course you could always get a cat or whatever to keep you company.

Three is, it's important to have a routine before you go to sleep.  Some people gotta take a hot bath and then have complete silence and dark in their room.  Me, I gotta have the lights on, the TV on (no scary shows), and I read a good but fairly boring book, and within a paragraph in, I usually pass out.  I also do not eat any food or drink any caffeine sodas after dinner, other than maybe a real small cookie and a half glass of milk.  Too much food and caffeine can keep you up.  Once in a while, if my thoughts won't stop with the bad stuff, I'll jot down real quick everything that is bothering me, it really helps to "get it out" of your system that way on paper...then I also write down the good things in my life.  Hope some of these tips help.
