Fetal Cell Transplant

by Rhonda__0__0, Sep 07, 1998 12:00AM

What can you tell me about the Fetal Cell Transplant?  I have an aunt with huntington's and she is very interested in having this done if possible.  looking for answers to these questions. Cost? How? When? Where? What? Who? Is this a possible cure or treatment?  Effectiveness?  And anything else you can tell me would very much appreciated.
Thank you so much for your time in reading these questions.

Thanks for your question.  Unfortunately, fetal cell transplantation for
Huntington's disease is still in the experimental stage, as in experimental
animals, probably still years away from human subject in any significant scale.
As for an explanation on how and why it might work, the following is an
article published in a medical/scientific journal a few years back.  It
was not intended nor written in layman's terms, but you can give it a try:
Rationale for intrastriatal grafting of striatal neuroblasts in patients with Huntington's disease.
Neuroscience 1995 Sep;68(2):273-85   (ISSN: 0306-4522)
I hope this information is helpful.
