Is it possible to correct Meningocele by performing fetal surgery? I have an 18 year old niece that is due in Oct 2010 and is pregnant with a baby that has Meningocele. She lives in a third world country and the information she is getting is limited. Doctors told her that the baby has a strong heartbeat and good movement of upper body but from the waist down the baby is not showing movement. Seems like there is excess fluid in the lower back and near the baby's head. A sonogram taken yesterday showed that the liquid near the head was completely gone. Any advice on how to go about trying to correct the problem before the baby is born? what are the chances of a succesful surgery before or after birth? will the baby be able to walk? will the baby be able to live a normal life? are there any organizations that perform these surgeries here in the USA on a humanitarian basis? Thank you!
