Fizzing sound in neck

Hi, for about a year now i have had this fizzing sound in my neck that occurs randomly, usually when i am just laying down. It doesnt occur when i am moving my head or anything, its usually just when i sitting still or laying down. It sounds like it is coming directly from the back of my neck and is starting to worry me. I also experience these weird pains in my head that come for about a second and then go and come back again every 10minutes or so. These pains are in 1 area in the back of my head in about a 1 square inch area.. Any ideas???

It is just natural circulation of cerebrospinal fluid, I too get this.
No worries!

Hello. I’ve had this for 20 years. It certainly is odd that we all have very specific symptoms and no one can tell us what it is. Good news is that it’s been 20 years of random infrequent annoyance and nothing more.

I’m trying to record it with my smartphone by holding the mic directly on my spine / neck when I feel it coming on. No luck yet.

Hey seriously im just asking here are most or all people here feeling un motivated, dont sleep much, gaining weights, can snap and change mood very quickly (often to anger or frustration) and or eating allot and ive also noticed that when this happens to me i feel a slight tingling sensation running down my spine. If i open my mouth in a silent environment then others can actually hear the fizzing at the back of my neck. Also i cant seem to feel it when it does fizz. But let me know if you also have these symptoms.

My boyfriend can hear when it happens to me in the morning. He called it sandy neck. So others can hear it too if environment is quiet enough. I used to get it a couple of times in a month, now it’s everyday!! And couple of time in an hour!! No discomfort though, just strange.
Jack, this description is exactly right. All of that. What the hell IS this???
Sankarii,
No idea. Ive looked for a long time. Short of going to the doctors ive tried everything. Its progressed to a daily occurrence now. Usually when im very tired (going to sleep or waking up) and when im hungry. If i was to hazard a guess i would say its just synaptic fluid (synovia), leaking out of the joints in the cervical spine (back of the neck). This would be evedent as to myself suffering from really bad neck/back pain. It may be a case of leakage up and down the entire spine, however, we only hear it in our neck due to our ear drum being so close and could pick up the vibration and allow us to hear it. That is my only guess as to what the hell this is. If it is not this then i have no idea im afraid.

I only get the sound after sleeping a period of time.  I don't experience any pain and had always assumed it was some sort of fluid being dispensed from a gland located near the top of my spine/base of my neck.  It may happen once, sometimes twice.

My guess was that the fluid is meant to trigger hunger because I notice I ALWAYS feel hunger pangs immediately after it happens, and it always makes me feel more awake, regardless of how tired I should be at that point.

It seems to never happen again that day after I eat something, and if I'm still tired I'm able to go back to sleep at that point.

I've jokingly and somewhat seriously said to others that I felt like it's a spinal fluid responsible for making us get out of bed to go feed ourselves and get on with our day so we don't play around in bed forever with no sense of purpose.  LOL!

Now, I don't know what to think since it seems to not happen to everyone, nor does it seem that everyone here has the exact same condition.  I've noticed some that seem very similar and not so serious, while others seem to be painful and possibly linked to more serious issues.

If anyone has any ideas that haven't already been expressed here, please reply!

Thanks!

I meant to type "so we don't *lay* around...", not"play around".
I have also experienced this feeling accompanied by a growling tummy!
Your description is exactly mine. Hunger pangs, no pain. I only get it in bed in the AM. I’ve had it for 20 years.

Same thing here. Sounds and feels like bubbles moving upward.  It doesn't hurt but my neck is anyways tense and this is just a really odd thing to happen. I notice it seems to happen the most when I'm laying down flat on my back, with support under my neck to help my posture, and relaxed.

I have the same symptoms...pop cracked rice crispy on the upper back of the neck connecting to skull. Only occurs when I am laying down. It's scary and annoying. All Diagnoses that I get from neurology is pinched nerves.

Hi jonw1983, are you still getting this fizzing sensation or has it gone away over time? I have the exact same thing and no one can tell me what is causing it. Thank you.

I’ve had it for 20 years. Only happens in the AM while in bed and have hunger pangs / growling stomach. It can be annoying but hasn’t developed into anything beyond this.
