HYPOXIA-No brain damage but not responding?

by rosy2875, Jul 17, 2009 12:06AM
Hi there,
I am feeling very lost and wondering if someone could steer me in the right direction....
On April 2nd my Mom went in for a routine op (gall bladder and stones and to remove a pouch on inside in neck - would usually catch food and made eating difficult). The op went well. She came to and spoke to my Aunt. The nurses gave her some ice to help soothe her sore throat. BP was very high which was very unusual so kept her in recovery longer. but came down with help of medication I believe. My Aunt left her to rest. At that stage I believe she was in the general ward but were still coming to check on her BP every 15 mins. At some point her heart stopped. They were able to rescusitate her but nobody knows how long she was without oxygen.

They immediately put her in an induced coma for a few days. Also did a CT scan but found no sign of stroke or blood clots. To this day they still don't know what caused her heart to stop?

Mom has been on chronic medication too for a mild epilepsy. While she never actually convulsed, she would have blanks which lasted a couple of minutes. She was on stuff called Lamicton.

After 3 days the coma meds were stopped but she never came out of it. They put her under again, put a tracky tube down (once the surgeon was happy with healing of neck wound) this time for 4 days.

Every alternate day they were doing EEG's to monitor brain activity. They also did two MRI's. Both came up clear. No brain damage. But they can't explain why Mom isn't waking!??

the Neurologist he said it could be microscopic? But nobody seems to have any definite answers?

Whilst progress has been very slow (she was in ICU for 2 1/2 months), the tracky size has reduced down to the spigget. She's no longer on any oxygen. But she's still being fed through a pegg directly into her stomach. She sleeps and wakes. And she seems to hear us. On a few occassions she's cried!!
She also repsonds to pain.

Somebody said it sounded like what's referred to as the "Locked out syndrome" where she can hear everything but her body can't respond?? It's as if she's just got to snap out of it.

Any info would be very much appreciated!!!
