Hand tremors

From age 50(now 69y) I have increasing fine tremors of my hands-particularly noticeable on holding any object.Getting very difficult to avoid spilling liquids.I have been checked  and found neg for Neurological physical.Past history of thyroidectomy for thyrotoxicosis and now on Thyroxin daily 50mcg and Thyroxin levels ok.
My late dad had same symptoms and found neg on physical exam but no Thyroid disease.
Can you suggest any further tests please? The diagnosis given is Familial Tremors.
At the last visit  1 wk ago my neurologist put me on Topamax.
Is there any further advice you can give to stop my tremors?

Hi there. Causes of tremor can be stress, anger, fearcaffeine and cigarette smoking. Essential tremor is the most common tremor and is rarely seen at rest and becomes apparent when trying to do something like reaching for something. This type runs in families and has no underlying cause. other causes of tremors are drugs, brain, nerve or movement disorder, alcoholism, low blood sugar, multiple sclerosis overactive thyroid can cause a postural tremor. Treatment would be according to the diagnosed cause of tremors. If home care does not help, you might need certain tests like blood counts, thyroid function tests an glucose, EMG, NCV, Head CT, MRI head etc.
