Headaches

by AMC5, Jul 15, 2003 12:00AM
My 7 year old daughter has had a few sharp headaches.  They only last for a few seconds, come on suddenly, and hurt just on one side of the head.  Is this something I should be concerned with?  It happened 3 times within the last few weeks.  She is very healthy and has had no other symptoms.  Thank you.

There is a headache disorder called idiopathic (meaning we don't know) stabbing headache. Which are typically very brief (<30seconds) and painful. The exact cause for these headaches are not known, but very frequent attacks can be treated with medication. Seeing your pediatrician to ensure that her neurologic examination is normal would be reasonable. In general terms, kids with a normal neurologic examination and no major neurologic symptoms do not have serious underlying neurologic disorders. If there are any concerns then consultaion with a pediatric neurologist or pediatric headache doctor is recommended. There are only a few pediatric headache doctors in the country. We are fortunate to have Dr. A David Rothner,a pediatric neurologist who specializes in headaches. I hope this information helps.
