: Having had a severe herniation myself in 95, I went through one surgery in October and yet another the following May.  I wish I had had a second opinion prior to the first surgery.  I think that I may have avoided the second surgery if I had done so.  Ask yourself which is more important-- your health and well being or the mood swings of an innsensitive (seemingly) surgeon.  If I were you I would definitely pursue the second opinion and request copies of your medical records.  You do have that right afterall.  The surgery I had was not a fusion -- first a microdiskectomy and second was to clean up the nerve root opening around the L5-S1 nerve root and a decompression of the nerve root.  Your age and the degree to which this is affecting your life would be the two factors to consider.  Good luck to you!
