Herpes and urethral irritation

by james, Oct 08, 2000 12:00AM
I am a 23yo male of good general health who has had Herpes type 2 for 4 years. About 3 years ago I started having increased urinary frequency and continuous slight irritation inside the urethra (the best way to describe it is an itch that you can't reach) I have been on Famvir for suppresion of the herpes and have tryed to find an unrelated reason for the irritation. However, all urological avenues of investigation have yielded  normal results.
Is it possible that the irritation is caused by some sought of nerve damage done by the herpes virus? If so is there anything that can be done about it? I have been on 50mg Tryptonol to try to reduce any neuralgia but it had no effect.
If it is caused by nerve damage, do the nerves which are sending unwanted signals heal or switch off or die over time?
I also find that the irratation and related need to urinate is greatest when I am under stress (e.g. exams), could anxiety have some effect?
Also what is the general opinion on acupuncture for nerve related problems?
Feedback on any or all of these questions would be most appreciated.

Dear James:

I am sorry to hear of your conditon.  I would think that your problem is in great part due to your herpes infection.  As you know, herpes cannot be cured and once you have it, it is lifelong.  We can treat symptoms and hinder the progression of the disease with medications.  Your symptoms may be due to the constant ebb and wave of the herpes disease itself.  I would speak to your urologist and get his/her opinion.

Sorry, that you have to suffer.

Sincerely,

CCF Neuro MD
