Horner syndrome due to internal carotid artery dissection

Horner syndrome due to internal carotid artery dissection

I am a 64 year old male from the Netherlands. Ten months ago I had an internal carotid artery dissection and I developed Horner Syndrome ( small pupil , droopy eyelid and lack of sweating on some part of my face). The doctor informed me that in 50% of these cases the Horner Syndrome symptoms will go away , but it may take long time. Has somebody experience in this ??

Hi there. Oculosympathetic palsy or partial horner syndrome, ptosis with miosis maybe present in about half the patients and when accompanied by ipsilateral pain and retinal ischemia suggest an internal carotid artery dissection.  This is called partial because anhydrosis is absent. It is important to diagnose dissection because anticoagulation can prevent carotid thrombosis and embolism. The investigation of choice is MRI and angiography of head and neck. Treatment advocated is anticoagulation for 3-6 months. Consult your neurologist immediately for the treatment avenues applicable to you. Hope this helps. Take care.
