How To Cope With Laryngeal Dysphagia to Keep Dental Check Up Safe?

by ILADVOCATE, Jan 22, 2009 11:29PM
I'm posting the question in the neurology forum because its not a condition my dentist (or many) encounter. As I've posted I have advanced tardive dyskinesia. My dentist agrees that the laryngeal dysphagia (exact diagnosis for this aspect of it by my neurologist) could be a problem and it is as eating or minor objects entering the mouth or just autonomic stimuli can set off choking spasms. That's the worst place you want to be in when you go to a dentist. But I am way overdue for an appointment and the Tenex has improved things a bit. I can eat and swallow better for example. My psychiatrist (he works with my neurologist) thought of the idea of an ENT specialist (and it sounds like a good idea) but all this takes a lot of time. Without regular dental visits, I'm at risk of cavities (and have gotten many before from anti-cholingergic effects of previous meds). I need to go.
To put the question simply is there anything I could do or take that would temporarily reduce the dysphagic spasms so that they (not the pain which is bearable) would not be set off by a routine dental visit and potentially a standard tooth filling if cavities are filled? My dentist is willing to accomodate me but he doesn't know what to do. Thanks in advance for any helpful responses.
