How long can a viral infection in the head last?

How long can a viral infection in the head last?

I will attempt to be brief.

I am an otherwise healthy 21-year-old male university student.  Two weeks ago today I woke up and felt sore in the neck, eyes, jaw, and I had a moderate headache and my sense of being was off considerably.  It's best described as a slight sense of vertigo, lightheadedness, and wooziness.  It has not been severe enough as to prevent me from driving.  I immediately dismissed it all as having slept wrong, but as the days passed, the symptoms persisted, not really getting better or worse.  I began to grow worried, and a few days later I visited my university clinic, where I was told I either had some virus or a tension headache.  I have no history of headaches or migraines.  I left feeling satisfied that I had a virus that would clear up soon.

Days went on and my symptoms still persisted.  I grew very nervous one night and went to the ER, where the doctor performed a CT scan without contrasts on my head.  The test showed no abnormality.  I had bloodwork done as well, which revealed nothing exciting except slightly low potassium levels.  I was told I probably had viral meningitis, and the doc sent me home with some azithromycin and pain pills.

I read that such an infection lasts usually between 7 - 14 days.  I don't believe I ever developed a fever, and I have not had a sore throat or any other sign indicating an infection, not even at the beginning.

I sit here now still feeling pretty much the same, though I want to believe that perhaps I am beginning to feel slightly better in the evening before bed, though if I am not imagining this, the effect is slight.  I am anxious and it has been growing worse and worse as the days pass.   I also feel an odd sensation in my left leg and my pinky on the right side, with the weakness in the leg best described as weakness and the pinky sensation as numbness, though with both the effects are very slight, and I believe the pinky sensation I have had for some time now.

The main problem is in my head; a very real "off" feeling whenever I sit, stand up, or do anything.  Activity does not seem to make it worse, and I believe that my coordination and balance are intact, aside from how my head feels.

My question is... what's the tail end of how long the symptoms of either a meningitis virus or an inner-ear virus infection can last?  And is it even likely that that's what I have in the first place?  From what I read, it's not likely that I would be feeling what I am in the head due to MS or ALS, but I am not sure.  Could an anti-viral work?

I have an appointment with a neurologist in two weeks just in case the symptoms persist.  I am scared; I want to feel better desperately.

wow it's sort of a relief to hear you say these symptoms because i seem to be going through the exact same things.  my head feels almost like it has a headache with the same sort of pressure feeling but with no real pain.  and especially the feeling of your senses being "off" is exactly what i'm going through.  the whole thing started out for me when i came down with what seemed to be a normal case of the cold/flu.  lasted over the weekend with a minor temperature increase.  come that monday i was feeling relatively fine again but i started to notice my head was "off" too.  i brushed it off for the day but it persisted like yours and my temperature never really went away.  seems like the more i rested the lower it would go but the minute i would get up and try to do something, it would start to shoot up.  almost reached 101 while i was cooking lunch a few days ago.

after a clinic visit and an ER visit, the dr's can only conclude that i must have some viral type infection and to just take Mortin and ride it out.  they did specialized tests and very broad tests and they all came back negative saying i was perfectly fine except for the minor temperature.  hope it doesn't take too much longer though because i will be leaving work soon to go back to school as well.  best of luck to us both.  =)
