How long did initial pain last after dental work?

by shortcircuited, Sep 02, 2008 04:37PM
For those of you who developed TN after dental work, how long did the initial pain last?  How long before the pain returned?

It's been over a month since dental work caused or triggered my Trigeminal nerve pain.  I've had severe pain daily with periods of no pain off and on.  There is no apparent physical damage on xrays, but the pain happened during a novocaine injection.  The pain continued after the numbness wore off after having fillings replaced in right lower molars.  A round of steroids helped reduce the problem overall (the initial pain was indescribable,) but these attacks of "ice cream" jaw and face pain keep happening even on Vicodin.  I have stabs of lesser pain throughout the day.  Movement, like talking or chewing, and hot and cold are major triggers for severe shocking pain, and sometimes aching afterward.

I'm wondering if this is just a hurt nerve, maybe damaged by the needle and will actually heal, or if the dental work triggered TN that may be painful off and on for the rest of my life.

This discussion is related to trigeminal neuralgia after wisdom tooth extraction.
