: I have a daughter with hyperhydrosis on the palms of
her hands.  She is scheduled for throacticneurosurgery
to correct this. I have read that endoscopic
sympathectomies are being performed but I not in our
area (upstate New York).  Do any neurosurgeons on your
staff perform endoscopic sympathectomies to relieve
hyperhydrosis of the palms?  I would prefer to avoid
major surgery if possible.  Or do you know of any other
facilites in the U.S. where this is done?

We have an excellent neurosurgeon, Dr. Ian Kalfas, who specializes in spine surgery.  He does do a surgical procedure to treat hyperhydrosis.  He uses a posterior transpedicular approach which involves making an incision approximately 3-4 inches around the 2nd thoracic vertebrae, he removes a rib, partially, and cuts the ganglia.  It is a fairly simple procedure.  This is a  very simplistic view of the procedure.  If you would like more information call the neurosurgery department at the Cleveland Clinic 1-800-223-2273 ext 45670, or 216-444-5670 to arrange an appointment or to direct you to someone who could answer your questions directly.  I hope this information has been helpful.
