*I am sorry this is a little long but I really need some answers. I am really hoping you can help!!*
Hello, my name is Shanelle. I have two questions; one is about the medication, “ABILIFY (aripiprazole)”, I believe it caused my paralysis. The other question is about, a rare condition I have, called, “Transverse Myelitis”. I am hoping you can help me with some information.
I became permanently paralyzed, from the neck down, in April, 2008. I believe, and all of my research shows, it was caused by the drug, “ABILIFY (aripiprazole)”. Which was prescribed to me for my Bi-Polar. I was in the hospital for months, they ran every test in the book, but could not figure out what was causing, my paralysis and pain. Finally they diagnosed me with, "Transverse Myelitis". They could not tell me, what caused it or how I got it. They also told me, in different words, I would probably NEVER walk again! I am a very athletic, motivated girl that works hard for what she wants. So I will not accept this as my lifestyle. I believe if I find out what caused it I might be able to reverse it somehow or it will send me in the right direction to fix it. I have read everything on, "Transverse Myelitis", I could find (it is a very rare condition). When I read about it, I knew this is what I had, it matched my symptoms exactly. What I did not find in all my research was a cure or even anyone working on a cure (at least not in America in the UK they are trying to work on a cure). I also could not find any information on how to work toward improving the symptoms that come with this condition. Since there was so little information on “Transverse Myelitis”, I started researching anything, and everything I put in my body; like drinks, food, and any medicines. I wanted a reason, why I had suddenly became completely paralyzed. I thought if I had a reason, maybe I could fix it. I wanted to see if somehow the stuff I was putting in my body, contributed to my “Transverse Myelitis” condition and my paralysis. Turns out, I found A LOT of information, on “ABILIFY (aripiprazole)” causing paralysis. I found each piece of information, from very reputable and creditable resources. I looked up “Does the medication, ABILIFY (aripiprazole) cause paralysis”, or “What are all the side effects of “ABILIFY (aripiprazole)”. I worded some differently but you get the jest. I found this information in more than 20 different resources. When researching everything I put in my body, “ABILIFY (aripiprazole)” is the only thing that kept coming up as having a side effect of paralysis, or words grouped together to ultimately mean paralysis.
I am driving myself crazy, going from website to website to prove to myself, this is a fact. I would rather confirm it, with a Doctor. Will you tell me if, “ABILIFY (aripiprazole)” can in rare cases cause paralysis? I don’t want to ask my Doctor/Physician that prescribed it to me; he might feel embarrassed, if it does. I really want to know because, I think it will give me a piece of mind, and if I understand what caused it I might be able to start working on how to fix it.
Would you PLEASE, give me your professional opinion? Do you think, or know if the medication “ABILIFY (aripiprazole)” can cause paralysis? As helpful and resourceful the internet is, I would feel much more comfortable, hearing it from a licensed Doctor. I do not want to start from scratch, trying to figure out what else could have caused it.
*PLEASE READ IMPORTANT*
I was wondering if, you know, of anything about “Transverse Myelitis”? If so, could you give me any advice on how to start recovery? Or, if you have heard of a cure, or treatment that might help, please let me know. Anything at all would be helpful? I cannot seem to find anything on the Internet.
Thank you again for your time,
Shanelle

I am so very sorry to hear @ the paralysis you're experiencing. I am having all sorts of things going on w/me like paralysis on just one side and on weird parts of my body, like my upper lip and one side of my face because I was crying the other day and you know how you feel the tear in your eye and eventually it runs down your face.I am scared because I felt and it was there, but I didn't feel the tear as it run. I don't know what is going on w/me. I don't know what Transverse Myelitis is, but I am going to research it.I am looking for answers too. I have symptoms as the same as MS, Parkinson's,Postherpetic Neuragia and also don't know if it's the nerve being pressed or one of these. I am scared to, I was diagnosed w/Bi-polar, but didn't feel the diagnosis was correct. I may have some depression due to issues that I am dealing with and anxiety because of my state now(in bed 3/4 of day),but I think that it was diagnosed by just a MD that saw me for a yr. until I moved and he saw me crying a lot because I was dealing w/being away from my son and that has been so hard.
Hey,If I can find anything that can help you I will. I will look and tell you if I find a good website for info on it. Hey, don't feel down. Feel Blessed...even though things look grim now...God has a reason for everything he does.He might just have something other than what you've got planned for you to do:)
I will keep you in my prayers...Karen
