I fractured my-2 vertebrae, I have no paralysis

I had an atv accident 2 1/2 months ago.  I fractured my C-2 vertabra.  I have been in an halo since than.  I was very lucky that I didn't have any paralysis.  The problem i'm having is the bones not healing.  The doctor recommended to keep the halo on for 1 more month and hopefully the bones start healing?  If not than they will have to go in and do surgery.  I think they said they will put screws in.  My question is how long should it take the bone to start healing?  I feel very blessed to have no nerve damage and that I can still walk.  The bon is completely broke on both sides and the doctors are amazed I can still walk.  I know most bones heal in about 6 weeks why hasn't mine started to heal?  If I get the surgery how risky is it?

You are a very lucky camper.  The FDA has approved several devices that emanate low-level electrical currents to facilitate bone regrowth.  Ask your physician about this treatment. There are many things we still don't know about the human body. Sometimes, unfortunately, the bones won't heal, and surgical intervention remains the only option. Currently there are several studies in Singapore regarding the use of stem cells to promote bone regrowth. It's a long way off, but Singapore has become a magnet for medical innovation. Check out the Jan 2010 issue of National Geographic. There are several points of contact in reputable medical schools in the United States regarding such treatments.  I have no opinion as to whether this option works. You should know it is one direction to think about. As far as the risks of surgery, it's hard to say. If you need this done, it has to be done. Select a facility that has done a lot of the procedures. What you do often, you get good at.  Easier said than done.  I have a preference for teaching hospitals, but that's just me. You have to balance human factors, including the fact many surgeons do not like their competence questioned by suggesting another place to have the job done. You have my sympathies.
