Index finger burning, no carpal tunnel

I am having burning sensation on the side of my index finger between the middle joint and top joint. There has not been any injury, no blisters, skin breakage, tingling or discoloration. The burning seems to be closer to the middle joint and more tender if I put any pressure on the joint. I had surgery many years ago for carpal tunnel but this doesnt feel anything like that. It is in only one finger and always on the side. I have tried using an anti imflamatory cream with no relief.
I am not sure whether seeing my primary care physician is the appropriate step to take or not.

Wish you had received an answer I have the same symptom. Index finger near the joint with a burning sensation, not when touching it but when carrying a plastic shopping bag or when my purse handles lay across the finger between the first and middle knuckle.
